My name is Suzette Panton. I grew up in Jamaica watching my parents (now 62 and 69 years old) exercise daily. They started when I was just a toddler. I knew I wanted to be active just like them throughout my life. When I’m not at the gym, I like to walk/run and do kickboxing. I stay busy taking care of my 3 boys (ages 17, 15, and 8 years old) and also working as a pulmonary & critical care physician.

WHAT ATTRACTED ME TO CROSSFIT ?

I was attracted to the movements and the challenge they presented. I heard it would be tough and I wanted to see if it was something I could do. I had worked out for years doing different things…yoga, aerobic classes, boot camps etc. The CrossFit movements were different and involved more body weight type activity.

MY FIRST IMPRESSION?

I wasn’t sure what to expect but I loved it and wanted to try it again. I wanted to see if I could master the exercises.

MY FIRST CLASS EXPERIENCE:

A CrossFit trainer came to the local gym I worked out at to introduce members to CrossFit. She came once a week. At the end of the first workout, I left feeling sore and spent. I had used muscles that I had not used in a long time.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

Lifting heavier weights generally and reducing the bands that I use for pullups. Increasing my front squat max 30 pounds over the past year.

ADVICE FOR NEW MEMBERS:

Be consistent. Don’t feel intimidated. Do what feels comfortable for you. Talk with the coaches.

SOMETHING NOBODY KNOWS:

My 3 boys all play soccer. We are a big soccer family. We spend lots of weekends and afternoons at the soccer field or traveling for tournaments.

2015 CROSSFIT GOALS:

To do 5 unassisted pull-ups. Increase my overhead squat max 15 pounds (don’t like overhead squats)

WHAT DO I LOVE ABOUT CROSSFIT TRIAD?

The coaches and the community.

HAS CROSSFIT TRIAD IMPACTED YOUR LIFE?

Definitely… overall I feel healthier and stronger. CrossFit has motivated me to remain physically active and has pushed me to movements that I didn’t imagine I could do. It has helped me to make the transition to Paleo. I first heard about Paleo 3 years ago. I am 90% Paleo now and it’s become a way of life for me without having to think much about it anymore.

FAVORITE LIFT:

Front Squat

FAVORITE WOD:

Grace. Short and sweet.

BEST MOVEMENT AND/OR LIFTS:

Backsquat, Front squat and Deadlift.

BEST WORKOUT SCORE MOST PROUD OF:

Decreasing my times on my runs and lifting heavier weights.

Ok so, what can I say about Clay? He started out not really expecting much to happen out of this new fitness program called CrossFit. However, he always had an open minded attitude towards it. His approach was easy going and he never cared much about all the accessories. Wristbands?, Who needs them? Rogue shorts? Why? He had swim trunks that were just as comfortable. Clay welcomed critique from coaches and was eager to learn and do the movements correctly. In his training, he was patient and consistent and it paid off big time. This couldn’t have been more apparent than during this year’s CrossFit Open. It wasn’t until 15.2 that we all realized just how much he had improved. That’s the beauty of the Open, right? You get to record your progress and see how much you have improved. You hope and expect to show progression, a 10-20% increase in reps and you’re on cloud 9. But his results were out of this world. When he performed 14.2 (chest to bar pull ups and overhead squats at 95#) his score was 33 reps. He gave 15.2 a go during one of our CrossFit Open Saturday Morning Throwdowns, his results?…a whopping 130 reps!!! That’s a 400% improvement! YEAH, that was awesome to witness. He gave us an unforgettable community moment. It was one of the most memorable moments since we opened. As coaches, we couldn’t be more excited for him. The rest of the Open kept showing his advances and strengths. Can’t wait to see what 2015 will bring. But here’s more about Clay so next time you see him, let him know how awesome he is. I am sure that will make him as uncomfortable as when his wife Kim, calls him out on social media about his swim trunks.

YOUR STORY. WHO YOU ARE? WHAT DO YO DO WHEN YOU ARE NOT HERE? JOB, SCHOOL, ETC:

Born and raised in Memphis/Germantown, I’ve lived here all my life. I graduated from The U of M in 2003 and have worked as a commercial lender for First Capital Bank for about 10 years now.

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO CROSSFIT?:

I joined CFT to support some friends and figured I’d give it a go for a few months over the winter and then would likely quit. I was wrong. I got hooked and don’t see myself quitting anytime soon.

WAS YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION ABOUT CROSSFIT WHAT YOU EXPECTED?:

Going in, I didn’t have much of an impression of what CrossFit was, but I do remember always being impressed by the leaders at the top of the Whiteboard each day and how far off I was from them.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST CLASS EXPERIENCE LIKE:

Judy Moss showed me the ropes that morning! Mama Cheetah was my first wod on Nov. ’13, 2013. I couldn’t do any of the rx workout…19 burpee buy in + 3 rds of 95lb thrusters + pull ups + double unders with 19 burpee buyout.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS MOST PROUD OF SINCE STARTING CROSSFIT:

There have been a few specific movements/weight gains that have been nice to reach but I’m most proud of the slow but steady progress 15+ months of consistent work has shown. I just seem to be able to do a little bit more every couple of weeks.

SOMETHING NOBODY KNOWS ABOUT ME OR WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT ME:

If I’m not at CFT during lunch I’m likely shooting pool with my boss

WHAT ARE YOUR 2015 CROSSFIT GOALS?:

Make it through the summer balancing at least 3x per week at CFT with a little golf while being a somewhat new dad…Leyton is almost 8 months already! Oh, and get better at sit-ups too.

ADVICE FOR NEW MEMBERS:

Stay consistent with attendance and use the Wodify app / website as much as you can…it helped me a ton learning weights/reps to aim for at each workout.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT CROSSFIT TRIAD?:

Those random days that the foam roller feels oh so good…

HAS CROSSFIT TRIAD IMPACTED YOUR LIFE AND HOW?:

Putting in the work at CFT has me in the best shape of my adult life and I enjoy the friendship, camaraderie, and support of all the members.

Favorite lift: snatch

Favorite WOD: 14.5

Best Movements and/or Lifts: wall balls and rowing

Best Workout score most proud of? 15.2…almost 100 rep increase in 12 months

PRIORITIES

Talk about a guy that knows his priorities. Brent Westbrook hardly ever misses a chance to be at the gym around 5:30 am cheering on the 5 am crew during their WOD. Maybe that’s a little motivation to get himself going, or maybe he’s just a good dude that likes to support his fellow crossfitters. Either way, if you want to see Brent in action, you could come in at 6 am Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday pretty much any week. Watch out though because everyone wants a little of what Brent is taking! You might not know it just by looking at him, but Brent is one of the strongest athletes at Triad. He front squats almost 2 times his body weight, and just today I caught him slipping under a 225lb hang clean with ease. Not an easy feat for a 160 lb person.

One of the best things about Brent is that he really knows how to train. He listens to his body as any great athlete should. He’s smart in his training and usually knows exactly what is right for him during any circumstance. He feels like he needs a rest, he takes it. Feels like he needs to scale down on weight, he does it. Needs a new goal, he sets it. Brent will be the first to tell you that he does this CrossFit thing because he loves it, and I’ll say he loves it for all the right reasons. He’s always talking to friends and co-workers trying to persuade them into trying CrossFit. His approach? He’s honest with them. He lets them know what kind of success he’s had, and what kind of transformation CrossFit can have on people. Then he tells them it’s hard as shit and to expect as much. Patty cake isn’t going to change your life…Triad just might. For more about Brent, check him out in this addition of Featured Athlete.

FAVORITE LIFT:
Any type of squat: front, back or overhead

FAVORITE WOD:
Jackie. It’s one of those that combines movements that I am good at and movements that are challenging.

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO CROSSFIT?:
The unquestionable results, the intensity, the 1 hour time commitment, and the group camaraderie.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST CLASS EXPERIENCE LIKE:
Barbells were foreign to me and wall balls seemed easy. I ended up nearly throwing up because I was trying to keep up with Andy.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS MOST PROUD OF SINCE STARTING CROSSFIT:
I have kept off nearly 25 pounds and am constantly amazed at what my body can accomplish. As I approach the benchmark age of 40, I can say that CrossFit has me in the best shape of my life and I feel great.

OUTSIDE OF THE GYM I WOULD LIKE TO:
Spend time with my family. Wife and I like to eat good local food and my boys and I like to hunt, fish, and camp. I also enjoy watching my boys play sports.

SOMETHING NOBODY KNOWS ABOUT ME OR WOULD BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT ME:
My boys and I are very involved in local Scouting. I got back involved with my oldest five years ago and now I am a Den Leader, District Commissioner, and Council Executive Board Member.

FAVORITE PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES OUTSIDE OF THE CROSSFIT:
Snow skiing, Tough Mudders, and all hunting and fishing that requires more effort than just sitting on your butt; especially duck hunting and trout fishing.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE NEXT 6-12 MONTHS:
Technically sound olympic lifts! As my technique improves I expect to have a bodyweight snatch and a two times body weight front squat. 10 unbroken muscle ups too.

DO YOU REMEMBER HOW YOU FIRST HEARD ABOUT CROSSFIT?
Yes, I built a spreadsheet to compare location, price and activity(in that order) and used the Google to help me fill it out. My friend, Blake had signed us up for a Tough Mudder and the CrossFit main site looked like it would help me get stronger to handle the obstacles.

ADVICE FOR SOMEONE THAT WANTS TO TRY CROSSFIT:
Be honest with yourself and with your Coach. Be ready to change. Work hard and get more sleep.

ADVICE FOR NEW MEMBERS:
Stay motivated. Eat clean. Get more sleep.

Kim Smith

Athlete of the month: Dec 2013
Details

Kim Smith has been miss CrossFit since she first started here at Triad last fall. From being super consistent, to drawing in so many of her friends, to her dedication to making this place feel like a home away from home for herself and all the other members, Kim has been an awesome addition to this community. I’m sure she has friends that haven’t quite made the leap to try Crossfit, and I’m sure they still get an earful every lunch date they share. Keep spreading the good word Kim! We appreciate it! Kim has been very influential in bringing in new recruits.

It has also been great watching Kim progress through her CrossFit journey. Of course there have been ups and downs, as any worthwhile journeys should have, but she has stuck it out and has attacked every workout she’s faced. From her first Rx wod, her first pull up, and her epic battles with Lana, Kim has been a real ring leader for that always entertaining 9:30.

FAVORITE LIFT:

Cleans and Overhead Squats. I like cleans because they used to be really hard for me but one day, Randy told me it’s like swinging a baseball bat. Once you get the feel for it, you’ve got it. I remember when that happened and now I think they are fun to do. I like overhead squats because I just feel kind of cool lifting something over my head and squatting!

FAVORITE WOD:

Grace! It has cleans in it and it’s short and sweet.

LEAST FAVORITE LIFT:

For some reason, the snatch is just hard for me. I really don’t want to see myself on video doing that. When I snatch, it looks like a deadlift to a clean to a push press. I have lots of room for improvement.

LEAST FAVORITE WOD:

14.5. I still have nightmares about that WOD.

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO CROSSFIT:

So much! I have done lots of different things to get into shape; boot camps, run, swim, cycle and workout classes at mega gyms. I liked them all, but what intrigued me most was the fact you are always working towards new goals and every day is a new challenge. While everything I’ve tried was just about burning calories and doing exactly what the teacher said, it eventually got boring. I always say CrossFit turned working out into a hobby for me. I look forward to going every day. It’s not just something on my checklist of things I “should” do.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST CLASS EXPERIENCE LIKE:

I had been waiting for CrossFit Triad to open. I was really excited to be at one of the first classes and be a part of CrossFit. I just remember it being hard, but I couldn’t wait to come back the next day and bring some friends along.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS MOST PROUD OF SINCE STARTING CROSSFIT:

I’ve been doing CrossFit for a year and there have been several cool memorable moments. First was when I did my very first RX wod. Then when I did a pull up unassisted for the first time. And when I finished all 5 of the 2014 Open workouts.

OUTSIDE OF THE GYM I LIKE TO:

Date night, be with my kids, hang with friends, go to the movies, go out to eat, shop, get my nails done. I am starting to like cooking now that this Paleo lifestyle is forcing me to.

FAVORITE PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES OUTSIDE OF CROSSFIT:

I like riding bikes. I am ready for my youngest to be able to ride a bike well enough to do the green line.

SOMETHING MANY PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT ME:

I lived in Texas for 33 years and have now lived in Memphis for 3. I used to be a special education teacher. I was also on a jump roping team as a kid and I still need to use my passport.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE NEXT 6-12 MONTHS:

To speed up my running and to string a few kipping pull ups together.

DO YOU REMEMBER HOW YOU FIRST HEARD ABOUT CROSSFIT:

When I lived in Dallas, I remember seeing CrossFit gyms pop up all over and I wondered what they were. Then, after moving to Memphis, my friends Andy and Ana were way into it so I guess I could say they shared their greatness of CrossFit. Then, lucky me, they opened a gym!

ADVICE FOR SOMEONE THAT WANTS TO TRY CROSSFIT:

Just do it. I always tell people I bring to CrossFit, you have to give it some time. It will feel like the first day of a new job. You will be full of questions but after a few classes you will be hooked, especially when you accomplish something you think you could never do.
